About Us

The Thatchers’ Legacy of the Vine, Established 1912

Long before Thatchers Farm Estate became a celebrated name in South Africa’s wine and hospitality scene, it was a humble family farm. Founded in 1912 by Edward Thatcher, the land was once home to fruit orchards and a small dairy that supplied the neighboring towns of Johannesburg.

Through droughts, harvests, and seasons of change, the Thatcher family tended the soil with a deep respect for the land, passing down both wisdom and work ethic through generations. Today, Richard Thatcher, the fourth-generation custodian, carries that legacy forward,  blending time-honored tradition with modern sustainability to create an estate that honors its past while embracing the future.

A Legacy Nurtured Through Generations

Each generation of the Thatcher family has left its mark on the estate, expanding the vineyards, modernizing the winemaking process, and opening the gates to guests seeking peace and authenticity. Today, visitors can walk the same fields once tended by Edward Thatcher, taste wines crafted from the original soil, and experience the same warm hospitality that has defined the estate for over a century. Visitors are invited to experience the rhythm of the farm, to walk the vine rows at sunrise, taste wine pressed on-site, and rest in villas that echo the warmth of a family home.

Thatchers Farm Estate stands for more than fine wine and scenic stays, it represents a philosophy of care. The estate’s approach blends eco-conscious farming, local partnerships, and responsible tourism, ensuring that every guest’s experience supports both the land and the people who nurture it. From water conservation and organic vineyard practices to sourcing ingredients from nearby farms, every choice reflects a commitment to balance, between luxury and simplicity, heritage and innovation.
